This video clip
is from a newscast discussing how a Texas father is suing his daughter's
alleged cyber-bullies. As mentioned in the clip, three middle school girls are
accused of posting an online video that is supposedly defamatory to their classmate.
Although some
pursue civil lawsuits to recover financial retribution for damages, such as
lost wages or distress, the father is this case is seeking something else. The
father says that the parents of the alleged bullies have
refused to meet with him to discuss their children's actions. He could not get
them to acknowledge or reprimand the girls' behavior. Therefore, the father is
pursuing civil suit to as a final means to make the bullies leave his daughter
alone.
Quick thought:
This video
provides another example of how relentless cyber-bullying can do financial
harm. Because of the defaming video posted on Facebook, the families of the
alleged bullies must now endure the expense of a legal battle and possibly a
court order to pay damages. Such trouble could have been avoided if the bullies
had just left their classmate alone.
READERS, what do you
think?
Would more
parents step in to stop cyber-bullying if civil lawsuits like these became
common?
Do you think
these alleged bullies would have stopped their behavior if they knew they could
be sued for defamation?
